On November 20, 1961 US president John F. Kennedy penned this letter in support of the work of the League. Printed on White House stationery, it reads:
November 20, 1961
The Bible is the common heritage of all men. It is the foundation upon which the great democratic traditions and institutions of our country stand. Recognizing what it has meant to the development of our American way of life, we can hope that other nations and societies will also find light and guidance in this book.
It is good to learn of the campaigns through which the Pocket Testament League has distributed more than 20 million Scripture portions in Japan, Korea, Formosa, Southeast Asia, Europe, to our Armed Forces during the two World Wars and the Korean War, and more recently in the emerging nations of Africa.
As you embark on a continent-wide effort in South America, I want to extend my sincere wishes for your success in this timely distribution of the Word of God.
Sincerely, John Kennedy
