“What Flows from You?”

1 Corinthians 10:3-4

They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.

Thoughts for Today:

The Israelites were baptized in the Red Sea, and led through the desert by the Lord as they stayed under the cloud of His protection (see previous verses 1 and 2). They also found their nourishment and refreshment in Him and by Him. This was both literally -- the Lord provided manna to be gathered each morning and drank from water that was produced from a rock; and figuratively -- the food they ate was spiritual food, and the water they drank came from a rock, which Paul tells us in our passage today, was Jesus Christ.

Jesus spoke on this same subject in John 7:37b-38: "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them." The reference to "rivers of living water" is speaking of the Holy Spirit and the work He does in the lives of believers. Paul also wrote about the work of the Holy Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." These qualities should flow from us in the same way a fresh water spring flows from the earth. Pumping is not necessary. So what's the key? The flow is based upon how close we conform our thinking to God's Word. (Isaiah 26:3: "You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.")

Questions to Ponder:

All too often we see Christians taking their nourishment and refreshment from the Word, yet only a trickle of "living water" flows from them. Romans 8:6: "The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace." What's flowing from you today? Have you conformed your life to the Lord's will? Are your daily activities governed by what you want or by who you serve? Who governs you?
