2 Corinthians 1:20
For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ?Yes? in Christ. And so through him the ?Amen? is spoken by us to the glory of God.
Jesus is "Yes". He is not "No". So why don't we get everything we ask for? Because we ask with the wrong motives. (James 4:3: "When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.") But can there be a "wrong motive" in something as noble as asking for our children to get into the college of their choosing, or a marriage that is falling apart to be put back together? Yes, if the motive of self-fulfillment, companionship, or security is overriding the goal of living for Christ regardless of the situation. Therefore, believing in Christ is not a foolproof insurance policy for getting everything we want in life. However, obedience is. How so? Because obedience to Christ allows us to find peace no matter what happens.
Scripture tells us that God has promised to give us what we ask of Him -- if it is in accordance to His will. (1 John 5:14-15: "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us?whatever we ask?we know that we have what we asked of him.") As mortal humanity, our prayers and petitions are influenced by the urgency of the present moment. On the other hand, God sees and answers with an eternal, all-encompassing, and everlasting "Yes". The problem is His answer may not be readily recognizable or what we expect. It might even be beyond our capacity to understand. That's why trusting Him is so critical.
It's the point Paul makes in our passage today, "And so through him the 'Amen' is spoken by us to the glory of God." Although we don't understand all of what God is doing (or why He's doing it), because of Jesus, we know God makes good on all of His promises. It is why, regardless of the circumstances, we can express our agreement with Him. And when we do so -- our "Amen" brings glory to God.
Do you feel like God has let you down? Have your noblest prayers gone unanswered and unfulfilled? Set your heart on God and leave everything else up to Him. His "Yes" involves a lot more than we can ever imagine.
