“"Regaining Our Capacity For God"”

2 Corinthians 5:21

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Thoughts for Today:

When Adam rebelled in the Garden of Eden, he forced God to do something about sin. A holy God couldn't reach down to save him. From that point forward, God had to judge humanity. (Genesis 2:17: " But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die." Ezekiel 18:20a: "The one who sins is the one who will die.") On that day, in the Garden of Eden, Adam (and all humanity that followed) died spiritually. When he died spiritually, he was not only separated from God, but became alienated as well. In other words, he lost his capacity for God. This condition continues to be the plight of humanity. (Romans 5:12: "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.")

Yet, today God has His arms outstretched to a lost world. It doesn't matter who we are or what we've done. The worst sinner in the world can come to Him, receive forgiveness, and be reconciled to Him. Regardless of our failures, rebelliousness and transgressions -- God is not angry, He doesn't hate us, and He isn't waiting for an opportunity to punish. In fact, He loves us so much that He sent His Son Jesus to die for us. Jesus did not come to charge more debt to humanity, but rather to pay off our obligations. Jesus Christ is God's plan for reconciliation, and it is in Him that we become the righteousness of God. He is also how we regain our capacity for God.

Questions to Ponder:

Have you lost a little of the closeness in your relationship with God? Does He seem distant, unreachable, or uncommunicative? How have you been managing the sin in your life? What has the Holy Spirit been speaking to you about? Have you been ignoring His voice? What is He saying now? How will you respond?
