2 Corinthians 6:3
We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited.
Pastor Ty's son Joshua and my daughter Amanda are pretty close to the same age. As they've grown up over the years our two families have done a lot of things together -- from hiking and skiing, to boating and golf. During these activities there are two things Ty is fond of saying: "We're building memories," and "Kids might not seem to be paying attention, but they're always watching and taking notes." I think that's a pretty good perspective from which to raise a family and also conduct ourselves within the community in general.
In our passage today, Paul addresses a parallel topic: We need to be watchful about our behavior in the world and how people might perceive us. Why? So our ministry is not discredited. Previously, Paul discussed our position as ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20): "We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us." His point is whether or not the world is attracted or repelled by the Gospel can be to a large degree based upon how they view us. His warning is to not let our behavior reflect poorly upon our ministry.
Is there any area of your behavior that reflects poorly on the ministry of Christ? Aren't sure? Just ask your wife, husband, child or friend -- they will be happy to tell you (although you might not like the answer). I know I didn't. None of us are perfect. Sometimes we ignore the urging of the Holy Spirit's voice in our lives and we need other people to help us see clearly. What do you need to improve upon? Will you become a better ambassador for Jesus?
