2 Corinthians 6:18
And, "I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."
When I was a young man, I left my father's home to go off to college. But, I dropped out after the first year to go do the things I wanted to do. I skied, surfed, traveled and participated in some activities I would rather not discuss. I strayed for a while -- which led to a little distance in my relationship with my earthly father. He was, and still wanted to be my father, but I was behaving in ways that made it hard for us to communicate. That's what God is saying to us in our passage today: Our behavior effects our connectivity to Him. So we have to do our part in order to maintain the relationship.
Over the previous four verses (2 Corinthians 6:14-18), Paul has been discussing this same idea/concept/command to not be yoked to anything that separates us from God. In other words, Paul is saying, "Don't call yourself a Christian if you don't really mean it. Don't say that Jesus satisfies you if you're constantly seeking the world's pleasures."
When we placed our faith in Jesus Christ, God became our Father. In our passage today, the Lord is saying that we also became His sons and daughters. So if we are being hypocritical in our lives and participating in worldliness -- when we are supposed to be separated -- we can be certain of one thing: God's discipline and correction will soon be heading our way! (Proverbs 15:10: "Stern discipline awaits anyone who leaves the path; the one who hates correction will die." Hebrews 12:7: "Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?”)
God is unchanging; however, we are prone to wander off. Are you connected to the Lord right now or off doing your own thing? Have you allowed your earthly passions and interests to create distance in your relationship with the Father? How can you return now? Re-read the Parable of the Lost Son (Luke 15:11-32).
