2 Corinthians 11:4
For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
When I was young, I worked with an older man who was a Mormon. From what I could see, he was extraordinarily ethical and moral in his personal and business life; he was a committed father, and a faithful husband. He worked diligently, serving his church and helping those in need. In just about every way I respected the way he conducted himself. He even told me he was a believer in Jesus. However, the more we talked, the more I realized "his" Jesus was not "my" Jesus.
I played golf recently with a man who said he was also a Christian. I asked where he attended church, and he named a local Christian Science Reading Room. I asked if he believed in the Trinity. He said, "Of course I do, they are the three ethical principles of life, truth and love." I said, "Christ is a part of that trinity and He is not a principle -- He actually is God who became human to die for our sin." I then quoted John 3:16. The man basically told me that I was foolish to believe in fairy tales.
A lot of people say they believe in Jesus, label themselves as Christians, and even use the Bible as the foundation for their beliefs. However, calling yourself a Christian doesn't make you one. The dividing line between what we believe, and what most of the cults say, has to do with the identity and deity of Christ. It's really very simple: Either someone believes what the Bible says about Jesus -- without any additional revelation or inspiration -- or they don't.
Jesus is God; He was born in human form of the Virgin Mary; He performed miracles; He died for the sins of the world; and He was raised by His Father from the dead. One of the oldest statements of belief says it this way: "He is very God of very God, and very man of very man." If this is denied or modified in any way, shape or form, then a different Jesus is being preached. Are you on guard against deception? How well do you know your Savior?
