“"He is Sovereign"”

2 Corinthians 12:1

I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord.

Thoughts for Today:

If you will recall (from the previous chapter), there were a number of false teachers in Corinth who were trivializing and thereby undermining Paul's ministry. They said, "He's nothing, a lightweight, and all he does is teach the basics. On the other hand, we have visions and revelations!" Paul responds, "Okay, if you want to talk about visions and revelations..."

Visions and revelations were neither a new territory, nor uncommon experiences for Paul. He had them in the past and he knew, if it was the Lord's will, he would continue to have them in the future. However, he also understood the source was the Lord and therefore they couldn't be manufactured or manifested simply to impress other people. This gave him reason to doubt the veracity of the claims made by the false teachers. (Isaiah 45:11: "This is what the Lord says-the Holy One of Israel, and its Maker: Concerning things to come, do you question me about my children, or give me orders about the work of my hands?")

Questions to Ponder:

When we seek God with our whole heart (purity of purpose), the Lord will always manifest Himself to us. In Habakkuk 1:2a, Habakkuk asked of the Lord: "How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?" The real truth is -- although Habakkuk couldn't see it -- God was working the whole time. And the same is true for us in our lives as believers. So if it seems like nothing is happening on whatever is troubling you, trust that God is working. He is sovereign over all the details!
