“"Truth Is Revealed By What We Do"”

2 Corinthians 13:8

For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.

Thoughts for Today:

Paul was fully committed to living, teaching and preaching the truth God revealed to him, regardless of the cost to him personally. So if the Corinthians repented and returned to walking in truth, then Paul would rejoice -- even if their low opinion of him didn't change. However, if they refused to repent, Paul would exercise the authority God had given him to deal with the various issues he has been addressing throughout this epistle we call Second Corinthians. Either way, Paul knew one thing -- truth would prevail: "For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth."

My wife and I have been dealing with a particularly difficult situation over the last few months involving a family that is having trouble. Sometimes it can be difficult to uncover the real problem when it's blended in with a number of half-truths and the threat of impending crisis. It certainly would be easier for us to manage if children weren't involved and being affected by their parents' poor choices. In our passage today, Paul provides a sound basis for us from which to approach this problem or any other. Truth is revealed by what is done, not by what is said. It's easy to make excuses or place blame on other people for what's happened in life. It's also easy to talk about making changes. What's hard is to actually do it. In other words, our actions always unveil what we believe and the true nature of our hearts.

Questions to Ponder:

Are you having trouble finding the truth in a particular situation? Paul tells us, "We cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth." Those words confirm for us once again that God is in control and His truth will prevail in every circumstance. It may not happen today, this week or even next year, but God is unchanging and His truth will ultimately be revealed. How can Paul's teaching change your perspective on a situation you're currently facing? How will you adjust your approach?
