“"Not Once But Repeatedly"”

Galatians 1:9

As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!

Thoughts for Today:

There are some points of doctrine that are not essential for salvation. However, the grace of God is not one of those. Grace can never be compromised. In our previous passage, Paul's statement was so strong that the Galatians might have said, "He couldn't have actually meant it." In our passage today, Paul repeats himself. Why? Just to make certain they heard him loud and clear.

In our present society, it isn't considered "politically correct" to be absolute about anything. Even in my own writing I use phrases like, "I believe," "it's possible," and "probably." And it's very appropriate for me to use those words when speaking of my personal beliefs related to non-salvation issues of doctrine. However, there are other times when we must be bold and courageous to stand and speak the truth of God.

I am a firm believer that anything we do, whether in the practice of our faith or in worship, must be supported in Scripture. And many times we see it not just once, but on multiple occasions. God knows our nature is to doubt. That's why He frequently repeats Himself. For example, He's given us the Old Testament so we would have a clear picture of what faithfulness looks like and also understand the consequences of sin. In the New Testament, the Lord gave us Jesus, the Acts of the Apostles, and all the other letters so we would have the written principles to define His truth and His plan of salvation for humanity. And not just one time, repeatedly.

Questions to Ponder:

The following are three questions to ask related to how we express our faith in practice or tradition (in other words, doctrinal issues): First, do you see it reflected in the life of Jesus? Second, does it continue in the Book of Acts? And third, is it taught by Paul or one of the other Apostles? The most critical and non-negotiable points of our faith are repeated often in Scripture. That way we can be very sure it is God's plan not humanity's interpretation.
