“"At Just the Right Time"”

Galatians 4:4-5a

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law to redeem those under the law…

Thoughts for Today:

The Living Bible paraphrases our passage today: "But when the right time came, the time God decided on, he sent his Son, born of a woman, born as a Jew to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law..." Both the NIV and the Living Bible emphasize that Jesus did not enter the world as some sort of random event. God selected a specific date, time and purpose. He sent His Son to the earth at the earliest possible moment, so any earlier time would have been premature. There were prophecies to be fulfilled -- and other events and developments that needed to occur -- before the time was right for Christ to come to earth and provide His redemptive work for humanity.

I think it is also important to understand that God did not create His Son at the time He was born of the Virgin Mary. God the Son has existed as God eternally -- from the beginning. (John 1:1-3: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.") However, the virgin birth of Christ was an essential part of the redemption process.

Why is this important? Because Jesus was born as the fulfillment of the Old Testament Law. He is the only person to have kept all of its rules and regulations -- flawlessly. (Hebrews 4:15: "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.") He not only had the righteousness as God before becoming man, but also earned righteousness through the Law by His perfect obedience.

Questions to Ponder:

God's timing is always perfect. Do you really believe this great truth? If so, how will you apply it in your life today? Do you trust Him? Will you trust in His timing as well?
