“"An Inheritor with Benefits"”

Galatians 4:6-7

Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

Thoughts for Today:

What would your reaction be if you found out that you were the heir of one of the richest people on the planet? What if you were named in the will of Bill Gates, the Waltons, or Warren Buffett? Whatever your reaction, it would almost certainly be positive. Would some of those feelings involve hope, joy, peace, or freedom from worry about money? Probably.

Being an heir of God is infinitely more valuable than being the inheritor to any of the great monetary fortunes in the world. However, if we're not experiencing positive emotions from knowing that we're heirs of God, then it's probably because we aren't fully understanding or appreciating what our inheritance really means.

One of the great benefits of becoming a child of God is receiving the indwelling of his Holy Spirit. It provides believers with not only His power, but also the ability to address God in the same way as Jesus. (Mark 14:35-36: "Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 'Abba, Father,' he said, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.'")

The word "Abba" carries with it the idea of God being our "daddy". It is an Aramaic term that dispels the notion of God being a strict judge and instead replaces it with the truth of our Lord's familiar, loving and nurturing nature. He is the One who cares, understands, and relates to us. He is our best friend. (1 John 3:1-2: "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.")

Questions to Ponder:

The God we worship is not distant or compassionless. Yet all too often Christians don't experience a relationship with Him that reflects the "Abba" nature of our Lord. Why? Paul has given us the answer in this section of Scripture we have been studying -- we are bound by too many rules of our own making. What kind of a relationship do you have with God? Is it the one He desires to have with you? What ideas do you have that need to change?
