“"One of Sarah's Descendants?"”

Galatians 4:27

For it is written: “Be glad, barren woman, you who never bore a child; shout for joy and cry aloud, you who were never in labor; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband.”

Thoughts for Today:

In our passage today, Paul quotes Isaiah 54:1 -- the "barren" refers to Sarah who was told by the Lord to sing and rejoice. What was her reason to celebrate? She rejoiced at the promise God gave her by faith even before she became pregnant. (Hebrews 11:11: "And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise.")

Let's take a moment to recall what Paul wrote in Galatians 3:16: "The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but 'and to your seed,’ meaning one person, who is Christ." At first Sarah had no child; however, when God delivered on His promise and Isaac was born, all of her descendants far exceeded those of Hagar. How? Because of the spiritual application of this verse. The "children of the desolate woman" refers to the countless number of people over the centuries who have placed their faith in the "singular seed" of Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior. So every new believer is added to the number of Sarah's descendants. And as a result, those of us born again through the spiritual lineage of Christ are more plentiful than those born of human fathers and mothers.

Questions to Ponder:

Some days seem harder than others, so it's not always easy to "be glad...shout for joy and cry aloud". That is until we once again acknowledge the absolute truth of Scripture. What do you need to be reminded of today? What does the Bible say about how to approach your current predicament? How is being a child of God practically applied in your life today?
