“"Doing Good is a Part of our DNA"”

Galatians 6:9

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Thoughts for Today:

Last Saturday, I worked hard building a storage shed for my backyard. I started when the sun came up and finished an hour after sunset. My back and shoulders ached, but I was really happy with the result. Off and on, all day long I had been thinking about whether or not I should join my friend Jim on a mission trip to Costa Rica. I needed to make a decision and Saturday was my deadline. As I cleaned up, I made a decision -- I'm tired, I'm getting older, I've given a lot to the Lord's work, and I deserve to take a break and relax a little. I decided to not go. And then God spoke to me with thoughts I've come to know as His, "Don't be a whiner. This isn't about you. You love to travel, go to interesting places and share the Gospel. I've blessed you in countless ways. Is this really too much to ask?" Of course not! I was re-energized, called Jim immediately and told him I would go.

Sometimes we can all get a little weary from time to time. It can be from long hours on the job, serving our spouses and children, dealing with the mundane tasks of everyday life (including building a storage shed), or even the aches and pains of our physical bodies. Although those things might wear on each of us, we should never become weary in doing good. Why? Because as followers of Jesus, doing good is a part of our DNA. How could any of us follow the example of Paul as he imitates Christ, if we aren't doing good? (1 Corinthians 11:1: "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ") And Jesus never tired of doing good. (Matthew 21:15: "But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, 'Hosanna to the Son of David!' they were indignant.")

Occasionally, we might even become frustrated with how long the harvest cycle takes, and say, "I've been trying to sow good seeds, but I'm not seeing much in the way of a result. Where is the harvest?" In our passage today, Paul's advice is for us to be patient, hang tough, to not be a whiner -- and if we don't give up -- at the proper time we will reap a harvest. That's what I'm banking on!

Questions to Ponder:

Have you continued "doing good" or have you grown weary and frustrated? Will you begin once again? (Hebrews 12:3: "Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.")
