“"Breaking Through Deception"”

Thoughts for Today:

Scripture tells us why the Law was given: To kill (2 Corinthians 3:7); condemn (2 Corinthians 3:9); make sin alive (Romans 7:8-9); and provide an opportunity for sin to deceive us (Romans 7:11). The Law actually strengthened our enemy, sin, not us. So why would God give us something that would accentuate our weaknesses and magnify our shortcomings? Because sin had already beaten us. We just didn’t know it!

Throughout history, humanity has always deceived itself with words like, “I may not be perfect, but I’m pretty good. I’m a decent and moral person and my sins aren’t that bad.” But God doesn’t grade on the curve. So it doesn’t matter if we are much better or a lot worse than another person – we’re all sinners and deserve punishment. (Romans 3:23: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.) Unfortunately for us, the penalty for any type or variation of sin, great or small, is death. (Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.)

God had to break the deception His people had fallen into. He knew that no matter how hard we tried, humanity could never be good enough to be accepted by Him. Paul wrote in Galatians 3:23: “Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.” The Law took away every hope of salvation except by faith in a Savior. It was the purpose of the Law.

Questions to Ponder:

James 2:10 teaches: “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.” It’s like dropping a dish. One crack or chip is all it takes to spoil perfection. Have you dropped a dish or two lately? Is your perfection showing some cracks? All of humanity is in the same flawed condition regardless of how hard we try. Will you go to the Father now? He died so that you could live.
