“"Suitable for Divine Inhabitation?"”

Thoughts for Today:

We have been discussing this same general theme for the last several devotions. For review: What has God been doing among us? Two things, He has created a new people (verse 15) and a new body (verse 16). Jesus took two diametrically opposed groups, Jews and Gentiles, brought peace and joined them together into a new one -- His body, the church. Through Him we gained access to the Father (verses 17-18).

However, God did not only create a new body, He is also creating a new building, built on the foundation laid by the apostles and prophets, of which the cornerstone is Jesus (verses 19-20). The key concept is that the building is not yet finished. We ARE a new creation, yet He IS creating a new building. In other words, it's still under construction. Why the difference? Because the temple (verse 21) continues to grow.

New believers are being added to Christ's church every minute of every day. But that's not all. Peter tells us (1 Peter 2:5): "You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." So we also are continuing to grow individually as we expand our knowledge and understanding of God's Word and His ways. Ultimately, we will be perfectly fitted together with every other believer and will then be ready for divine occupancy: "... in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit."

Questions to Ponder:

Even as believers and faithful followers of Christ, we will experience friction from time to time. It's the way God shapes and directs us. And sometimes it can be a painful process. In which ways is God shaping you now? Is He using one of life's setbacks to draw you closer? Perhaps it is a fellow brother or sister in Christ? Are you paying attention or are you just irritated?
