Ephesians 3:17b
...through faith.
It happened to me last Sunday during worship. We were singing one of my favorites, The Revelation Song, and we came to the part: "Clothed in rainbows, of living color, flashes of lightning, roles of thunder; blessing and honor, strength and, glory and power be, to you the Only Wise King..." I was overwhelmed with the Goodness and Greatness of God. My throat tightened and my eyes began to moisten. My faith produced feelings -- both emotionally and physically. Unfortunately, if the average Christian doesn't "feel" the presence of the Lord, they don't believe He's there. But a feeling alone is not faith. And vice versa -- our faith is not empty if we don't experience great emotion.
I see this reflected a lot in prayer. Many people pray, "Lord, we ask you to be with us today," or "Be with us throughout the week." I recognize the intent (and I make the same mistake myself from time to time), however the Lord has promised (Deuteronomy 31:6b): "For the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." So any prayer that assumes His absence is wrong; and when we ask Him to join us, it is a little redundant because He is already with us.
My point is not to criticize prayer, but to illustrate how often we depend on feeling to lead faith. In our passage today, Paul's prayer was for the Ephesians (and by extension the church) to know and perceive Christ through faith, not only by feeling.
Are you dependent on feelings or the Word of God? What is He saying to you now? What does the Bible say about faith?
